Things to do in Munich

There aren't many better city break destinations than Bavaria's capital. Anyone who visits will find ways to fill their days, whether you want to play sport, tour medieval churches, learn about luxury cars or go clubbing all night long. Here are some of attractions on offer:

Tour the Old City Centre

The Altstadt (Old Town) is home to many of the city's historic sights, including the beautiful Frauenkirche, the Rococo fresco-filled Asamkirche and the Hofbrauhaus, one of the world's oldest and most famous brewery pubs. When your sightseeing is over, you can get a bite to eat at the Viktualienmarkt (food market) and relax in the sunshine with a glass of wine or a beer in the Hofgarten.

Football Fans Can Catch a Bayern Munich Match

Bayern are one of the world's greatest football teams, having won the European Cup five times and the German Bundesliga on a staggering 26 occasions. Visitors can easily book tickets to matches at the Allianz Arena to watch the stars compete in league and European fixtures. If you do attend a game, be sure to check out the Erlebniswelt museum which shows off the club's achievements and honours their past heroes in the Hall of Fame.

Explore Great Shopping Opportunities

Germany's second city could be its shopping capital, with places to buy luxury clothes, jewellery, watches, accessories and even cars, if that's what you desire. Don't leave out the boutiques on Maximilianstrasse, the Riem Arcaden (which is home to 128 high-end stores) or huge department stores like Oberpollinger on Neuhauser strasse.

Enjoy Some Traditional Bavarian Food

Bavarians love their food (and their beer), and the region's capital is a great place to find out why. Tuck into main courses like sausage and sauerkraut (fermented cabbage), pork chops with dumplings or schnitzel (breadcrumbed pork cutlet) and potatoes. Still hungry? Indulge in a decadent slice of Black Forest gateau or a piping hot apple strudel. When you're on the move, don't miss the pretzels, which come with cheese, meat or simply plain, and are always delicious.

Find Out About the City's Manufacturing History

BMW is a world-famous motoring brand, and the Bavarian capital is their home town. If you have any interest in cars, you'll want to visit the BMW Museum in the Olympic Park (and go have a look at the 1972 Olympic Stadium while you are there). It's a great way to trace the development of the company's trademark style and the building itself has a stunning futuristic design.
