Events in Fukuoka
There is always a lot happening here and for an up to date guide the Fukuoka Now magazine produces a useful guide in Japanese and English. In addition to the printed version, full details can also be found on the Fukuoka Now website. A few of the best events are:-
Hakata Gion Yamakasa Festival
This famous annual event takes place in the first half of July and culminates with a float race along a city centre route with seven teams from each of the city's districts competing. The decorated floats are without wheels and have to be physically dragged along.
Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament
The arrival of the Sumo tournament attracts many visitors both to watch the contests and also to meet many of the stars at various 'jungo beya' (places where wrestlers sleep and practice) throughout the city.
Nishinihon Ohori Fireworks
August 1st sees a huge display of fireworks from an island on a lake in Ohori Park. The display is spectacular in the park but can be seen from many parts of the city.
