Events in Edinburgh

There are lots of great festivals which bring in tourists from far and wide. Accommodation can be more difficult to find when the festivals are in full swing, so make sure you book early.

Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo (August)

A spectacular show with pipers, drummers and bands and it all takes place in front of the castle each year as part of the Summer Festival. The Tattoo is performed for three weeks in August each year, and tickets sell out quickly.

Fringe (August)

Also part of the Summer Festival, Fringe is the largest arts festival in the world which lasts for three weeks each August. There are 250 venues with shows large and small by every kind of artist imaginable. There is a lot to see, to suit every budget, but most things need a ticket so plan carefully.

St Andrew's Day (November)

On the 30th November, all of Scotland celebrates their patron saint. It is a national holiday and there are events to enjoy all over the country. In Edinburgh there will be story-telling and musical events.

Hogmanay (December)

The Scots ring in the New Year with torchlights, music and alcohol. The celebrations last three nights in Edinburgh, and on the 31st December the party is taken to the streets where you'll hear bagpipes and drums, and see a grand firework display.
