Indianapolis is the capital of Indiana and the cultural hub of the state. It is a historic city and was founded in 1821 before becoming a centre for trade and transportation. The city has many examples of great architecture. In particular, the 7-block long Indiana World War Memorial Plaza Historic District, which is often celebrated as one of the best examples of the grand and graceful City Beautiful movement. Designers of this style of building hoped that it would increase the quality of life for the city's inhabitants, making a more harmonious society. Whether this worked or not is still a hotly debated topic, but it's hard not to admire the stunning results.
The city is also known for its multitude of tourist attractions; there is something for everyone, from the educational yet inspiring Children's Museum through to the city's vast, futuristic Museum of Art.
