Cheap Flights To Lusaka

With bustling markets awash with colour and wildlife parks and elephant sanctuaries on your doorstep, there is something for every adventurous traveller in Lusaka. It is the capital and largest city in the African landlocked country of Zambia and has a population of about 1.7 million people. The city is bustling with activity and is the trading capital of Zambia as well as its seat of government. You will have no issues in communicating as the colonial influence left behind by the British means that almost everyone speaks English here.

Lusaka is one of those great African cities where you have to get out and explore all it has to offer on foot and be sure to take your camera with you to capture the beauty of its people. It is safe and the locals are very friendly and will always try and entice you to their roadside or market stalls to buy a colourful item of clothing or African curios and carvings.

There's plenty to see in the city, from museums to architecture, but if you want to get out and get a real feel of Africa, there are plenty of lodges, parks and camps which you can visit and get up close and personal with the wildlife.

Things To Do

From wandering through the city's markets and exploring the national museum to taking a wildlife drive through the national parks, there are plenty of options for travellers visiting Lusaka

  • For the bargain hunters

One of the most appealing things about this city is that it is so much fun to explore on foot. The Soweto market is cheap is definitely worth a visit if you are a bargain hunter and you can find anything from spices to traditional African clothes.

  • For wildlife lovers

The Liyali Lodge is a popular ranch where visitors can take a game drive and see wildlife up close and personal in a 4x4 accompanied by a guide. The Munda Wanga Park is another option and it is home to many animals that have been rescued from illegal traders and released there.

  • History buffs

The National Museum is by no means the largest yet it is charming African museum, chronicling the development of Zambia from pre-colonial life through independence, village life and witchcraft.

Calendar Of Events

Zambia is a developing country, but many of its people cling dearly to the traditional way of life and this is shown through the many ceremonies that are held throughout the year.

  • Nc'Wala Ceremony: If you want to enjoy something more traditional, you should head out of the city to the Ngoni people's Nc'Wala festival for the blessing of the first crops of the season in February.

  • Lusaka Colour Festiva: Held between May and July, this festival is literally a riot of colour, with people dressing up in white and the throwing of a lot of coloured powder while dancing to music with wild abandon.

  • Barefeet Youth Arts Festiva: This festival is held in August and brings together people from all over Zambia to enjoy arts, music, poetry and a festival atmosphere which is typically African.
