Cheap Flights To Udaipur

Maharana Udai Singh II founded Udaipur in 1559 and it soon became Mewar kingdom's new capital. Situated in the lush Girwa Valley it took over as capital from Ahar. Udaipur has many wonderful features, including palaces, lakes, temples and forts, all in a highly romantic setting. As Rajasthan's sixth largest city, many languages are spoken, including Hindi, English and Rajasthani.

Because of its beauty, history, culture and scenery, the city is an extremely popular tourist destination and a place of contrasts. Visiting Lake Pichola reveals the Aravalli Hills stretching far ahead while back in heart of the city, narrow, winding streets tell the human story of a place full of natural charm. Visitors can enjoy ancient bustling bazaars, a thriving arts scene and many quaint hotels, not to mention interesting shops. There are also boat trips and lovely countryside in what's known to be one of India's most romantic spots.

With celebrations always on the calendar in Udaipur, three of the major festivals are the Teej Festival, celebrating the arrival of the Monsoon in July/August, the Mewar festival to welcome the arrival of spring and the three-day Kumbhalgarh Festival, promoting the region's culture and heritage.

Things To Do

As a setting for many movies, the city's many sights and attractions will bring magic and romance to every visit.

  • Romantic Lakes
Lake Pichola in the heart of the city features the famous Lake Palace. Together, they're perhaps the city's most beautiful sights. Jaisamand Lake is also stunning and is Asia's largest artificial lake, therefore, a must-see for visitors.

  • Stunning Gardens
Udaipur has some real gems when it comes to gardens, including the Saheliyon ki Bari gardens to the north of the city with beautiful marble elephants, fountains and a lotus pool. At Gulab Bagh and Bird Park to the east of Lake Pichhola, there's a lovely rose garden.

  • Time with the planets and stars
As one of Asia's largest observatories, the Udaipur Solar Observatory is on an island in Fateh Sagar Lake. It's fascinating and well worth a visit with its excellent telescopes and equipment.

Calendar Of Events

Take part in the annual traditions and festivities the city has to offer. There's nearly always a celebration being held in Rajasthan for visitors and locals alike.

  • Mewar Festival: To celebrate the arrival of spring, the Mewar festival bursts into life, filling the city with colour, joy and excitement at every turn. A visit to this vibrant festival is highly recommended.

  • Kumbhalgarh Festival: This takes place at Kumbhalgarh fort in the mountains just north of the city. It's three days of celebrating the region's culture and heritage with events both day and night.

  • Teej Festival: July to August sees the Teej festival arriving in the city, which celebrates the monsoon and is in honour of Lord Shiva and Parvati. Married women play a major role in this festival as they pray for long, happy married lives.
