Discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1494, the area was named Golfo de Buen Tiempo, meaning "Fair Weather Gulf" and was given its current name, which is a Spanish variation or the word "lard", during the Spanish period (1511 to 1655). In addition to the heavenly beaches and glorious weather, Montego Bay boasts a range of attractions for people of all age groups. Hand feed the hummingbirds at Rocklands Bird Sanctuary. This impressive sanctuary is home to hundreds of different species of exotic and endemic birds. If you're in the carnival mood, then visit during the month of April when the Bacchanal Festival is held. This annual event is one of Jamaica's largest carnivals and features technicoloured processions, reggae bands, steel bands and more.

Although Montego Bay and the region attracts sun seekers and those in search of exotic and beautiful beaches, the area has so much more to offer. Dine in the finest restaurants or ride horses through the country trails. The choice is endless.
Spend the day at Cornwall Beach with its softly swaying palm trees, white sand and crystal clear waters. This is one of the most tranquil beaches in the area and is never crowded.
Established more than 50 years ago, the Pelican Grill is located in what the locals lovingly refer to as the "hip strip". The impressive menu serves offerings of fine Jamaican fare such as stewed oxtail and deep-fried cassava flatbread.
Chukka Horseback Ride N' Swim offers the ultimate way to see the region. Ride through one of the horse trails before heading to the beach and enjoying a horseback swim in the ocean.
Calendar Of Events
The residents of Montego Bay know how to party and their many carnivals throughout the year are renowned the world over. From yachting regattas to beach parties with a difference, the festivals in the area are always memorable.
The Bacchanal Festival. Hosted in April, the Bacchanal Festival is one of the largest organised events in Jamaica. The festival features dancers in sequined costumes, parades, reggae and steel bands and often culminates in a party on the beach.
Saint Ann Kite Festival. Hosted in March, Saint Ann Kite Festival offers a family friendly event on the beach. The festival features a myriad of brightly coloured kites, live music and competitions.
Montego Bay Yacht Club Easter Regatta. The Montego Bay Yacht Club Easter Regatta is held in March or April depending on when Easter falls. The event spans four days and onlookers are treated to a number of racing events.
