Myanmar's largest city and historic capital, Yangon is an elegant city full of wide boulevards, sprawling parks and picturesque lakes. Although the city as a whole has over 5 million inhabitants, it has a compact downtown core, making it easy for visitors to wander around and explore. Unusually, Yangon has thousands of colonial buildings, giving it the feel of a European city as much as an Asian metropolis. The network of parks laid down by the British in the late 19th and early 20th centuries is another striking feature, and it's easy to see why the city is also known as the "garden city of the East."
Yangon is a huge but easy city to get around, and seeing all of the pagodas, museums and monuments isn't strenuous. It's also a great place to enjoy southeast Asian cuisine, experience the nightlife centre of the country and get some shopping done too.
