The city of Oakland, California, is a little bit different to most places in the U.S.. Situated on the eastern side of San Francisco Bay, the city has often been in the shadow of its more famous neighbour, but those 'in the know' know that there's way more going on here than you might expect.

One of the most ethnically diverse cities in the United States, it has a longer history than most. The city stands on a site populated by the Huchiun Indians since time immemorial and was first claimed by the Spanish in 1772 before finally being incorporated as a city in 1854.

These days, Oakland is a major city, the fifth busiest port in the U.S. and has been voted America's most exciting city, one of its coolest cities and the number one city in the Northern U.S. to visit. With more theatres, museums and cinemas per square mile than anywhere else in the country and a growing number of cutting-edge places to eat and drink, a visit to Oakland is well worth anyone's time. 2.5 million people last year alone seem to agree.

There's so much to do in Oakland that it's difficult to know where to start. There's the art and culture of course. The food and drink rank pretty high on the list. Then again, it's surrounded by amazing scenery.

• Cultural highlights

The city is full of fascinating and individual museums; visit the Chabot Space and Science Center for a child-friendly day out, or take a cruise on a piece of living history on the refitted USS Potomac. Or take in a gig or a show at one of the many Theatres and cinemas such as the Fox or the Paramount.

• The beautiful outdoors

The city is surrounded by stunning scenery which is full of great trails and sites of great natural beauty to get out and about in. Try the historic Preservation Park, jog the amazing Bay Bridge Trail or stroll round the beautiful Lake Merritt. Getting further out, why not try the gorgeous Joaquin Miller Park, or hike among the majestic redwoods at Redwood Regional Park.

• City life

Get to street level to truly enjoy the diversity of the city. Visit the vibrant Chinatown or take a tour of the handsome architecture of the Old Town. Sink your teeth into local cuisine at home favourite Homeroom or quench your thirst with a local brew at Hog's Apothecary.

Calendar of Events

There's something happening all year round in Oakland, whatever time of year you choose to visit there's bound to be an event to delight or surprise you.

• Easter Egg Hunts. These are a big deal for the kids, with many places holding them. Montclair Park and the Dunsmuir Hellman Estate offer great scenery for the adults to enjoy, too.

• The Book Festival. Held every May, this is one for the bibliophiles. Over 90 writers descend on the city to discuss their work and all things literary in a series of panels and events.

• Oaktoberfest. The classic beer festival is given a local twist by the presence of the city's excellent local craft breweries, and a lively street festival atmosphere guarantees a good time.
